Tunisian PM quits after failing to form new government

TUNIS (Reuters) - Tunisian Prime Minister Hamadi Jebali resigned on Tuesday after failing to replace a government pulled apart by acrimony between his Islamist allies and their secular opponents.

Jebali had threatened to quit if his plan for a non-partisan cabinet of technocrats to lead the north African country into early elections foundered.

In the end it was his own party, Ennahda, that rejected the proposal, prolonging the political stand-off that has cast a shadow over Tunisia's fledgling democracy and deepened an economic crisis.

"I vowed that if my initiative did not succeed, I would resign and ... I have already done so," Jebali told a news conference after meeting with President Moncef Marzouki.

Tunisia's deepest political crisis since the 2011 Arab Spring uprising that toppled President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali began when leading secular opposition politician Chokri Belaid was gunned down outside his home in Tunis on February 6.

No one claimed responsibility for the killing, but it deepened the misgivings of secularists who believe Jebali's government has failed to deal firmly enough with religious extremists threatening the country's stability.

Protesters poured onto the streets in the following days and Marzouki's secularist party threatened to quit the coalition government.

Jebali said he would try to form a cabinet of apolitical technocrats to restore calm and take Tunisia to elections, but did not consult his Ennahda allies or their secular coalition partners before making the proposal.

Several secular politicians backed the plan but Ennahda, winner of most parliamentary seats in elections that followed Ben Ali's overthrow, opposed the idea, fearing it would be sidelined from power.

Jebali bet his own job on the outcome, saying he would quit if he was rebuffed, and lost.

He quits 15 months into the job, although political experts said Marzouki was likely to re-appoint him as caretaker premier before a new leader is appointed.

Ennahda leader Rached Ghannouchi has said he wants to see Jebali head a new coalition. President Marzouki was due to meet Ghannouchi on Wednesday to ask him to name a prime minister.

But Jebali, announcing his resignation late on Tuesday, said he would not lead another government without assurances on the timing of fresh elections and a new constitution.

No government would be viable without Ennahda's blessing given its strength in parliament.

Ghannouchi has said it is essential that Islamists and secular parties share power now and in the future, and that his party was willing to compromise over control of important ministries such as foreign affairs, justice and interior.

"Ennahda is in negotiations with political parties to form a national coalition government", said Fethi Ayadi, a senior Ennahda official.

Iyed Dahmani, a leader of the secular Republican Party, said some kind of agreement was vital.

"We are in real trouble, politically and economically," he said.

The crisis has disrupted efforts to revitalise an economy hit hard by the disorder that followed the overthrow of veteran strongman Ben Ali.

Tunisia has been negotiating with the International Monetary Fund for a $1.78 billion loan and politicians said Jebali's inability to re-establish a functioning government had slowed efforts to restore normality.

Credit rating service Standard and Poor's said on Tuesday it had lowered its long-term foreign and local currency sovereign credit rating on Tunisia, citing "a risk that the political situation could deteriorate further amid a worsening fiscal, external and economic outlook".

Hackers get into Jeep's Twitter account

DETROIT (AP) ? A Chrysler spokesman says someone hacked into the Jeep brand's twitter account Tuesday afternoon, making false Tweets for about an hour until the company that handles its social media regained control.

The move was similar to an incident involving the Burger King restaurant chain on Monday, although it's unclear if the two incidents are linked.

Hackers posted that the Jeep brand had been sold to Cadillac because employees had been caught using pills. They also posted that there would be no more Jeep production.

Chrysler spokesman Ed Garsten says the company's social media agency got help from Twitter to regain control of the account. He doesn't think the brand name was damaged by the Tweets because most people know it was a prank.

Ohio college student's online parody goes viral

CINCINNATI (AP) - An Ohio college student's online parody of the Korean pop hit "Gangnam Style" has gone viral.

The parody by Brian Schwing, who grew up in Cincinnati, has nearly 4.5 million views on YouTube and counting.

The 22-year-old is working as an intern at NASA in Houston and is a senior at Ohio State University.

His video, "NASA Johnson Style," shows his fellow interns at Johnson Space Center dancing like "Gangnam Style" singer PSY and singing altered lyrics.

Schwing tells the Cincinnati Enquirer (http://cin.ci/159g0lQ) that it took him about 200 hours to produce the video, with 15 hours of footage that had to be edited down to four minutes.

Schwing says he hopes the video gets more people interested in science and spaceflight.

How predictable is evolution?

Feb. 19, 2013 ? Understanding how and why diversification occurs is important for understanding why there are so many species on Earth. In a new study published on 19 February in the open access journal PLOS Biology, researchers show that similar -- or even identical -- mutations can occur during diversification in completely separate populations of E. coli evolving in different environments over more than 1000 generations. Evolution, therefore, can be surprisingly predictable.

The experiment, conducted by Matthew Herron, research assistant professor at the University of Montana, and Professor Michael Doebeli of the University of British Columbia, involved 3 different populations of bacteria. At the start of the experiment, each population consisted of generalists competing for two different sources of dietary carbon (glucose and acetate), but after 1200 generations they had evolved into two coexisting types each with a specialized physiology adapted to one of the carbon sources. Herron and Doebeli were able to sequence the genomes of populations of bacteria frozen at 16 different points during their evolution, and discovered a surprising amount of similarity in their evolution.

"In all three populations it seems to be more or less the same core set of genes that are causing the two phenotypes that we see," Herron said. "In a few cases, it's even the exact same genetic change."

Recent advances in sequencing technology allowed Herron and Doebeli to sequence large numbers of whole bacterial genomes and provide evidence that there is predictability in evolutionary diversity. Any evolutionary process is some combination of predictable and unpredictable processes with random mutations, but seeing the same genetic changes in different populations showed that selection can be deterministic.

"There are about 4.5 million nucleotides in the E. coli genome," he said. "Finding in four cases that the exact same change had happened independently in different populations was intriguing."

Herron and Doebeli argue that a particular form of selection -- negative frequency dependence -- plays an important role in driving diversification. When bacteria are either glucose specialists or acetate specialists, a higher density of one type will mean fewer resources for that type, so bacteria specializing on the alternative resource will be at an advantage.

"We think it's likely that some kind of negative frequency dependence -- some kind of rare type advantage -- is important in many cases of diversification, especially when there's no geographic isolation," Herron said.

As technology advances, Herron believes that similar experiments in larger organisms will soon be possible. Some examples of diversification without geographic isolation are known in plants and animals, but it remains to be seen whether or not the underlying evolutionary processes are similar to those in bacteria.

Amazon fires German security firm amid probe

(AP) ? Online retailer Amazon reacted to mounting criticism Monday by firing a security company named in a German television documentary about alleged mistreatment of foreign temporary workers.

An Amazon spokeswoman in Germany said the company had ended its relationship with Hensel European Security Services "with immediate effect."

"Amazon has a zero tolerance limit for discrimination and intimidation and expects the same of other companies we work with," spokeswoman Ulrike Stoecker said in an email to The Associated Press.

A documentary shown on German public television channel ARD last week showed staff of the security company ? whose initials spell out the surname of Adolf Hitler's deputy Rudolf Hess ? wearing clothes linked to Germany's neo-Nazi scene. It also interviewed people claiming they were intimidated by the security guards, who were stationed at a holiday camp where the temporary staff were housed.

The company, hired by one of Amazon's subcontractors, last week denied it supported far-right opinions. "We employ Christians, Muslims and Buddhists," the company said in a statement Friday. "The allegations of far-right sympathies can't be reconciled with that."

The ARD documentary alleged a broader climate of intimidation at Amazon's seven logistics centers in Germany, including threats of random staff searches, constant pressure to perform better and firing of workers who complained.

The ARD report echoes allegations by German union ver.di, which says Amazon's temporary workers face particular difficulties because many have been brought in from other European countries and don't understand that they are protected by Germany's stringent labor laws.

The German government said the Federal Labor Agency is investigating an Amazon subcontractor, which it didn't name, in the wake of the documentary.

"We expect the results of the special investigation during the course of the week," Labor Ministry spokeswoman Christina Wendt told reporters Monday.

"There is the option, if mistreatment actually took place, of removing (the subcontractor's) license," she added.

Russian meteor strike: why your wedding ring was once part of a searing fireball of interplanetary rock

Almost all of us own a piece of space rock. Or at least, almost all of us us who are married do.

It's true. Your wedding ring ? if it's gold or platinum ? almost certainly did not start its life on Earth. Four and a half billion years ago, when our planet was forming out of the swirling disc of debris that was the solar system, your jewellery was nowhere to be seen; it arrived hundreds of millions of years later, in a cataclysmic bombardment of asteroids. Or so scientists believe.

There would have been lots of gold in the forming earth, but because our nascent planet was molten rock at that stage, the heavy materials would have sunk to the core, and gold and platinum are among the heaviest naturally occurring elements. But, around four billion years ago, the moon was subjected to a violent series of large space strikes, as revealed by the craters on its surface and radiometric dating of rocks brought back by the Apollo missions. In 2011 a University of Bristol team found evidence that the crust of earth is partly formed of similar rocks. The period when all this was happening is known as the "late heavy bombardment", and it's believed that this is what delivered almost all the heavy metals in the earth's crust, including gold, tungsten and platinum.

I'm writing this because it was reported the other day that the meteor that exploded over Russia last week has sparked a "gold rush", as excited collectors hunted for pieces of the rock. One has appeared on a Russian auction site at a price of ?6,500. There should be plenty to find: Nasa researchers have now said that the meteor was far larger than originally thought, about 55 feet across and weighing around 10,000 tons, the biggest object to hit the earth since 1908. Despite the extraordinary force with which it smashed into the atmosphere (it exploded with the energy of 30 Hiroshima bombs), plenty of fragments should have made it to the ground.

The sprint for debris reminds us just how fascinated with space rocks we are. The actual content of the meteor will, most likely, be nothing particularly exciting: early reports suggest that they're chondrite, a mineral mix containing about 10 per cent iron. But the simple fact that it is not of this earth makes meteor-stuff appealing. Rich collectors, including Steven Spielberg and Nicholas Cage, will spend thousands of pounds on small fragments: ?10,000 an ounce is fairly standard, according to the Macovich Collection of Meteorites, and for a lunar meteorite, blasted off the face of the moon by one of those ancient collisions, it could be five times that.

But the fascination is ancient. Anyone who's ever read a fantasy novel knows that "star iron" makes the best magic swords ? but it isn't only the stuff of sub-Tolkien imaginings. In pre-Iron Age civilisations, which were unable to smelt iron ore, the only source of pure iron ? which made far better weapons and tools than soft bronze or copper ? was meteor fragments. The Assyrians called iron the "metal of god" or "of heaven", and in ancient Egypt it was known as "bia-en-pet", or "thunderbolt of heaven". A dagger made from meteoric iron was found in Tutankhamun's tomb; for centuries the Inuit used harpoons made from iron from a giant meteorite that fell in Greenland.

The connection between heavenly fireballs and heaven ? and the judgment of God ? is old, as well. A clergyman in the Russian town of Chebarkul, where a hefty piece of the meteor is believed to have fallen (government divers are searching the bottom of a local lake as I write this), said that "with all of this, God is warning us of the end times". Most of us nowadays might not subscribe to that view ? although there was something apocalyptic about the footage of the great fireball streaking towards earth, like the beginning of an alien invasion movie ? but in the earlier centuries, the idea was more widespread. Zoroastrian prophecies from 500BC predict that the world would end when a comet, hurled by Satan, crashed into the earth; both the Book of Revelation and the Old Testament talk about rains of fire from the skies.

Anyway. We don't think of meteors as harbingers of Armageddon any more (most of us), and we don't need them to forge weapons for battle. But I quite like the knowledge that my wedding ring, and my late grandmother's ring which my wife now wears, hurtled out of the sky in a howling ball of flame four thousand million years ago. When someone asks "Where does it come from?", it's a better answer than "a jewellery shop in Stowmarket", anyway
