Google Adding Explanations to Knowledge Graph

Google is adding explanations to Knowledge Graph panels, where applicable. The explanations, which appear when a user hovers over images in the ?People also search for? section, offer more information on how two subjects are connected.

In the product announcement, Google uses the movie "Gone With the Wind" as an example. Hovering over icons people also search for, in this case "The Wizard of Oz", displays an explanation that Victor Fleming directed both movies.

gone-with-wind-expanded-google-knowledge-graph

It can also be used to indicate familiar or professional associations, as in the case of a search for actress Sandra Bullock. Keanu Reeves appears in the ?People also search for? section of the Knowledge Graph?panel for Sandra Bullock. Google now explains, ?Sandra Bullock and Keanu Reeves both appear in The Lake House and Speed.?

?We?re starting by showing major co-starring roles between actors, movies, and TV shows as well as highlighting family connections amongst famous people in the Knowledge Graph,? Google engineer Golan Pundak?explained on the Inside Search Blog. ?These connections won?t show up all the time, but when there is an interesting explanation available, you can now see it at a glance.?

When Google launched Knowledge Graph in May, Engineering SVP Amit Singhal described the ?People also search for? feature as ?magical,? crediting this feature for some of his ?most serendipitous discoveries.?

Knowledge Graph is part of Google?s mission to provide the information searchers seek on the SERPs page, or as close to it as possible.

Is Calvin Johnson Still the NFL's Best Wideout?

Despite what some have considered a disappointing start for Calvin Johnson, the Detroit Lions receiver still remains the best player at his position in the NFL.?

His statistics are down from 2011 but still elite, and there's no player at any offensive position that has the kind of physical mismatch that Johnson brings every week on the Lions' schedule.?

Some of Johnson's early struggles?culminated?during Detroit's 13-7 loss to the Chicago Bears Monday night.?

On 11 targets, Johnson caught just three passes for 34 yards and zero touchdowns as the Lions continued to sputter inside the red zone. For for first time since 2010, Johnson didn't have a catch in the first half.

Quarterback Matthew Stafford did attempt to get the ball to Johnson on several occasions in the end zone, but the two still haven't hooked up for a touchdown this season. Stafford found Johnson for 16 touchdowns last season.?

Even though the scoring numbers are down significantly (Johnson had nine touchdowns through six games in 2011), the remaining statistics still paint the picture of an elite NFL receiver.?

This season, Johnson has 38 catches (10th in NFL) for 592 yards (fifth), good for a 15.6-yard average (19th). Of the 38 catches, 12 have gone for 20 yards or more (first) and 29 have been good enough for first downs (eighth). Johnson's 98.5 yards a game is second-best in the NFL.?

Put those numbers over a 16-game schedule, and Johnson is currently on pace to catch 101 passes for 1,579 yards this season. In 2011, Johnson caught 96 passes for 1,681 yards.

Johnson's one touchdown is an obvious sore spot, and so is his catch-to-target ratio (38 catches to 66 targets). But the rest of the numbers are what you'd expect from one of the game's best receivers.?

Is Calvin Johnson still the NFL's best receiver?

Is Calvin Johnson still the NFL's best receiver?

  • Yes

  • No

Combine the numbers?which so many have considered "struggling" for Johnson?with his still-intact physical skills, and you get a receiver that still should be considered the NFL's best.?

There are just precious few human beings on the planet that are 6'5" and 240 pounds with a vertical leap of 42.5 inches and a 40-yard time of under 4.4 seconds. There are even fewer cornerbacks capable of handling such a physical freak of nature, even if Charles Tillman did such a fantastic job Monday night.?

Eventually, the touchdown numbers will return, the doubters will vacate and Johnson will be hailed as the game's brightest star at the receiver position. A lot more than a one-touchdown stretch over the first six games of this season is needed to steal that title away from him.?

'Blue' light could help teenagers combat stress

ScienceDaily (Oct. 22, 2012) ? Adolescents can be chronically sleep deprived because of their inability to fall asleep early in combination with fixed wakeup times on school days. According to the CDC, almost 70 percent of school children get insufficient sleep -- less than 8 hours on school nights. This type of restricted sleep schedule has been linked with depression, behavior problems, poor performance at school, drug use, and automobile accidents. A new study from the Lighting Research Center (LRC) at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute shows that exposure to morning short-wavelength "blue" light has the potential to help sleep-deprived adolescents prepare for the challenges of the day and deal with stress, more so than dim light.

The study was a collaboration between Associate Professor and Director of the LRC Light and Health Program Mariana Figueiro and LRC Director and Professor Mark S. Rea. Results of the study were recently published in the open access International Journal of Endocrinology. ?

Levels of cortisol, a hormone produced by the adrenal gland, follow a daily 24-hour rhythm. Cortisol concentrations are low throughout the day reaching a broad minimum in the evening before rising slowly again throughout the night. In addition to this gradual elevation of cortisol at night, cortisol levels rise sharply within the first 30 to 60 minutes after waking. This is known as the cortisol awakening response (CAR). In nocturnal animals, the cortisol spike occurs at night, at the start of activity. It appears to be associated with the time of transition from rest to activity, upon waking. A high CAR has been associated with better preparedness for stressful and challenging activities.

"The present results are the first to show that low levels of short-wavelength light enhance CAR in adolescents who were restricted from sleep," said Figueiro. "Morning light exposure may help to wake up the body when it is time to be active, thus preparing individuals for any environmental stress they might experience."

Short-wavelength light has been shown to maximally suppress production of nocturnal melatonin and phase shift the timing of the biological clock. The effect of short-wavelength light on other biomarkers has not been widely studied.

The study included three overnight sessions, at least one week apart. All participants wore a Dimesimeter on a wrist band to measure light exposure and to verify the regularity of their activity/rest periods during the three-week study. The Dimesimeter is a small calibrated light meter device developed by the LRC that continuously records circadian light and activity levels. During the study, adolescents aged 12 to 17 years went to sleep at 1:30 a.m. and woke up at 6:00 a.m., a 4.5-hour sleep opportunity. Each week, participants either experienced morning short-wavelength blue light (40 lux of 470-nanometer light) or remained in dim light.

"We found that exposure to short-wavelength blue light in the morning significantly enhances CAR in sleep deprived adolescents, more so than dim light," said Rea. "Morning exposure to short-wavelength light may be a simple, yet practical way to better prepare adolescents for the challenges of the day."

LG Optimus L9 comes to T-Mobile on - Know Your Cell

T-Mobile users will be having another nice smartphone option this holiday season, as the LG Optimus L9?will be landing on the carrier Oct. 31 for the bargain price of $79.99 with a new, two-year contract.?

You're going to be getting a heck of a phone for that price, as the LG Optimus L9 will pack a 4.5-inch screen, a dual-core 1GHz processor, 5-megapixel camera and it will be capable of using T-Mobile's 4G network. You'll also get a phone that launches with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and it will soon be updated to the Android Jelly Bean.?

As we've become accustomed to with T-Mobile, the pricing will be somewhat flexible. You'll be able to land the Android phone for the aforementioned $80 price tag after a mail-in rebate and with a two-year deal. Those who want to spread out the payments a bit can buy it for 20 monthly payments of $15 per month with the proper plan. I'd advise the first option if possible but I do appreciate T-Mobile offering multiple ways to pay for this.?

Riders stranded aboard Stratosphere at Texas State Fair

By NBCDFW.com staff

Updated at 12:37 p.m. ET: One of the State Fair of Texas' tallest rides malfunctioned Friday night, stranding two dozen riders in the air for more than two hours.

Riders in the Stratosphere's hanging seats were stuck dangling about 165 feet in air when the ride lost power at about 9:11 p.m.

Carol Stradtman, one of the stranded riders, told NBC 5 by phone that all of the lights went off and the ride just stopped.

"It's extremely scary," she said.

View NBCDFW.com for complete coverage

The 24 riders were on the ground at about 11:20 p.m. Dallas Fire-Rescue said all of the occupants were safely removed from the ride after it was manually lowered.

Power was restored to the ride by 10:50 p.m., but there appeared to be some issue that prevented the ride from immediately lowering its passengers.

Two Dallas Fire-Rescue technical rescue trucks were at the fair to help.

Stradtman told NBC 5 that someone had climbed the center of the tower at about 9:40 p.m. and appeared to manually?attempt to bring them down. She said a friend who was not on the ride said there was some kind of mechanical difficulty but said she had not been given an update on when or how they would get off the ride.

No injuries have been reported, Dallas police said.

The Stratosphere, a 200-foot tall tower, turns and swings riders out over the fair.

The Dutch-made ride stalled at the Minnesota State Fair twice in as many days in August, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reported.

NBC 5's Ray Villeda and Ellen Goldberg contributed to this report.

Reverse brain drain pulls Brazilians home, and Europeans with them

Reverse brain drain means twofold "brain gain" for Brazil as the global recession pulls native Brazilians home and, with them, a wave of European migrants leaving their austerity stricken homelands.

By Sara Miller Llana,?Staff writer / October 21, 2012

Miguel Lago works at the nongovernmnetal organization Meu Rio (My Rio), in Rio de Janeiro. He left Brazil to go to Columbia University in New York and returned in the global reverse brain gain when the economy in his home country turned around. This is part of the "Great Brain Gain" cover-story project in the Oct. 22 issue of The Christian Science MonitorWeekly magazine.

When school friends Alessandra Orofino and Miguel Lago were growing up here in the 1990s, their hometown wasn't where they envisioned getting an auspicious start to their futures. It was depressed, dirty, and violent. So like thousands of Brazilians with means, they headed abroad for college ? both to Europe, and she, later, to the United States.

"When I left, people said, 'You are never going to come back,' " says Ms. Orofino, who graduated from Columbia University in New York City.

Both friends ? like many immigrants around the globe ? figured they'd have careers abroad, returning home much later. They were part of the classic brain drain in which human capital flows from developing to developed nations.

But as they began college in the mid-2000s, the Brazilian economy was starting to boom, with a rising middle ? and consuming ? class. Indeed, by 2009, when Rio won the bid to host the 2016 Summer Olympics, Brazil was an economic magnet for investment and "brain gain" migration. It was no longer a place to flee.

Now, not only is the Brazilian diaspora reconsidering its exile, but educated Europeans, fleeing economic recession, are flocking here.

Orofino and Mr. Lago returned in 2011 and started a nongovernmental organization ? Meu Rio (My Rio) ? to foster citizen promotion of transparency and good government in this era of explosive and lucrative growth in Rio.

"I saw the way that France's public services work, [and] for the first time in my life I experienced what was possible," says Lago, who studied at Sciences Po in Paris. "I thought, we have to fight for that in Brazil."

As Meu Rio opened its doors, Portuguese engineer Francisco Cruz saw firms around him downsizing as projects dried up. So he left his job in Portugal to relocate in Rio, which was drawing up blueprints for stadiums, bridges, and tunnels.

It was "riskier to stay in Portugal with a job than to move to Brazil without one," says Mr. Cruz, who got his first employment interview on his second day here and within a month was on the job at a firm designing Rio's bus transit system for the Olympic Games. The firm now is bidding on an Olympic Park project.

Euro banking deal fails to impress markets

(AP) ? A sketchy agreement on how to create a single European banking supervisor failed to impress markets on Friday, with stocks drifting lower ahead of another round of U.S. corporate earnings statements and after a shock trading update from Google.

On Thursday, Google surprised investors by publishing by mistake its worse-than-expected earnings ahead of schedule. After billions were wiped off the internet giant's market value, the company suspended trading in its shares.

Microsoft also disappointed with its latest update, contributing to a broad retreat in technology stocks.

"After what had started to look like a relatively upbeat season, investors are now looking a little more wary," said Fawad Razaqzada, market strategist at GFT Markets.

Highlights later include earnings reports from McDonald's, General Electric and Honeywell.

By mid-morning in Europe, Germany's DAX was down 0.3 percent at 7,412 while the CAC-40 in France fell 0.2 percent to 3,527. The FTSE 100 index of leading British shares as flat at 5,918.

Wall Street was poised for a subdued opening with both Dow futures and the broader S&P 500 futures down 0.1 percent.

An agreement early Friday by the leaders of the 17 euro countries to push ahead with a single banking supervisory body failed to support markets. The leaders remained vague on key details, such as when the supervisor will be up and running.

Some investors and analysts worry that Europe's politicians may have lost the incentive to fix things quickly now that market turmoil has subsided. The borrowing costs of countries like Spain have eased since the European Central Bank unveiled in September a new bond-buying program.

"Europe's politicians seem to have kicked things into the long grass for a few more months as they fail to agree on steps towards banking supervision or closer integration," said Rebecca O'Keeffe, head of investment at Interactive Investor. "As interest rates continue to fall, so the need to act decisively diminishes."

The unconvincing result of the EU summit left the euro trading 0.2 percent lower on the day at $1.3050.

Earlier, Asian stock markets plodded through a mostly mixed session.

Japan's Nikkei 225 index rose 0.2 percent to finish at 9,002.68. South Korea's Kospi lost 0.8 percent to 1,943.84. Hong Kong's Hang Seng added 0.2 percent to 21,551.76.

In mainland China, the Shanghai Composite Index fell 0.2 percent to 2,128.30 and the smaller Shenzhen Composite Index shed 0.2 percent to 877.29. Markets in Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, Indonesia and India also fell.

Oil markets were subdued with the price of benchmark New York crude down 4 cents at $92.06 a barrel.

Member of 'Bling Ring' pleads no contest

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? A 22-year-old woman pleaded no contest Friday to a burglary charge for stealing from the home of Lindsay Lohan as part of a group known as the "Bling Ring."

Diana Tamayo was sentenced to three years of probation by Superior Court Judge Larry Paul Fidler and also must perform 60 days of road work. She could have faced six years in prison if convicted at a trial.

Authorities said Tamayo was one of six people charged in thefts in which more than $3 million in clothes, jewelry and art was taken from the homes of stars such as Lohan, Paris Hilton, Orlando Bloom and Megan Fox.

Tamayo's attorneys previously argued that she acknowledged involvement in breaking into Lohan's home because police officers threatened her family with immigration consequences.

Two other suspects ? Courtney Leigh Ames and Roy Lopez Jr. ? are scheduled to return to court Nov. 8. Both are charged in the theft at Hilton's home.

Authorities arrested most of the group in October 2009.

One defendant, Alexis Neiers, quickly ended her case and starred in the short-lived E! Entertainment Television reality show "Pretty Wild," which prominently featured her court case. Lifetime created a television movie inspired by the case, and Oscar-winner Sofia Coppola has filmed her own movie based on the burglaries and the fallout.

Nicholas Frank Prugo, 21, who is suspected of being a ringleader of the group, pleaded no contest in March to burglarizing the homes of Lohan and reality star Audrina Patridge, and is supposed to be sentenced next month to two years in prison in exchange for testifying.

Another suspected ringleader, Rachel Lee, pleaded no contest to burglarizing Patridge's home and is serving a four-year prison sentence.

A Louis Vuitton bag full of jewelry was returned to Paris Hilton after several members of the group were arrested, but much of the stolen property hasn't been recovered.

None of the celebrities testified in open court, but several including Bloom, Lohan and Hilton testified before a grand jury that indicted the six young adults on charges that included felony burglary, receiving stolen property and conspiracy.

Many spoke of the unsettling feelings they experienced to return to homes that had been burglarized.

Tips To Help With Home Improvement | ArticlePDQ.com

When comparing quotes from contractors for home improvement, don?t just look at the dollar amount. There are many factors which should also be compared, like warranties, time lines, labor costs, and how often they are contracted to be on site. You want to balance the cost of the project with how much it will affect your life.

If you are going to do home improvements to an entire property and not just one room, make sure you have a concise idea from the outset of what you are wanting to achieve. Making major alterations to plans mid project will not only cost money, but could also lead to issues with any contractors working for you.

A great way to add some life to your bookcases and end tables, is by adding some nice tablecloths. You can make your own by purchasing some nice higher end fabric and sewing in the ends to prevent fraying. Arrange your items in a visually pleasing manner, which is sure to be the new focal point of your room.

If you are planning on painting a room as part of a home improvement project, you can save money by accurately estimating the amount of paint you will need. One gallon of paint will cover about 350 square feet of wall space, unless you are painting drywall, which absorbs more paint. An accurate estimate can prevent you from overbuying paint, which once mixed in a specific color generally can?t be returned.

One great way to make the inside of your home sparkle is to put new molding in. New molding helps create a fresh sense in your living space. You can purchase special molding with beautiful carvings on them to add an unique touch of elegance and style to your home.

Look for cracks or shifting of your home?s concrete slabs or driveway. Slabs on the exterior should always be positioned so that any drainage that occurs faces away from your home?s foundation. Use crack filler to fill in any cracks, or use a silicone caulk. Next, power-wash and then seal.

If you are in need of financing for your home improvement project, you want to find the best loan. However, you want to determine the amount you need that will secure the appropriate funds for any costs you incur to determine what is the best loan to choose. A mortgage or personal loan could be optimal for different budgets.

Have a large bulletin board in your kitchen or living room, where you can write reminders for yourself of things you need to do or bills you need to pay. Emergency phone numbers, contacts, brochures, postcards and notes to yourself, look better arranged on a bulletin board and won?t clutter your refrigerator or other appliances.

Reading books on home improvement won?t make you an expert, but actually completing a project will. It?s great to have some knowledge on the ins and outs of any work you plan on doing, but spend only 20% of your time learning and 80% of your time actually completing the renovations.

Before tackling any kind of project involving your walls?even hanging a painting?make sure that you know what kind of wall you are dealing with. Some wall materials require special treatment and particular kinds of wall anchors in order to support an object hanging from it, and being careless can result in cracks or crumbling plaster.

While individual solar lights are very affordable and available in a variety of styles, these lights serve little more than decorative purpose. If you truly need lighting that will highlight a walkway and illuminate your path, invest in electric models. While these are typically more expensive, they are reliable and will last for many more years than most solar models.

Hopefully, you have found the power that you need to complete the project that you are planning or would like to plan. With the help of some power tools, as well as, the information that is included in this article, you will likely get the results that you want to get, by completing the project on your home.

Developed a technology that predicts metastasis in breast cancer

ScienceDaily (Oct. 18, 2012) ? Researchers at the Bellvitge Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBELL) and The Institute of Photonic Sciences (ICFO) have collaborated on the development of a diagnostic tool that identifies the metastatic ability of breast cancer cells. The analysis is based on the characterization of the lipid component of the cells, which is indicative of malignancy. This has allowed the researchers to develop a classifier to discriminate cells capable of inducing metastasis.

The results of the study have been published in the online version of the scientific journal PLoS ONE.

The characterization of the lipids associated with malignancy has been possible thanks to the technological development of a spectroscopic device named Raman along with the versatility offered by the experimental models of breast cancer. The results of this process form the basis for introducing this technique in routine cytological diagnosis, which could be extended in the future to diagnose other tumours.

The researchers have analyzed the main components and, partly, the less discriminating ones to assess the profile of the lipid composition of breast cancer cells. They have generated a classification model that segregated metastatic and non-metastatic cells. "The algorithm for the discrimination of the metastatic ability is a first step towards the stratification of breast cancer cells using this quick and reactive tool," explains the study coordinator, ?ngels Sierra, researcher at the Biological Clues of the Invasive and Metastatic Phenotype group of IDIBELL.

Using cytology techniques, the researchers have found a correlation between the activation of lipogenesis (the chemical reaction leading to fatty acids in an organism) and the amount of saturated fats in metastatic cells indicating a worse prognosis and a decreased survival. The lipid content of the breast cancer cells might be a useful measure to determine various functions coupled to the progression of breast cancer. The work has been supported by the Instituto de Salud Carlos III, the former Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation and the private Cellex Barcelona Foundation.

Mobile Finally Saturates the Enterprise: MobileCON 2012 Recap ...

When I started working in enterprise mobility in late 1993, ?mobility? meant replacing field workers? pagers with cell phones ? and since I worked for Nextel Communications, that included merging cellular and two-way radio technologies so that white-collar and blue-collar employees within the same firm could keep in constant contact.? Then came mobile browsers and WAP (wireless application protocol), empowering field workforce management and mobile customer service applications ? though a worker?s location was determined by advancing a work ticket status to ?at customer location? instead of by GPS, which didn?t enter mobile networks until early 2003.

Between 2000 and 2002, mobile operators were scrambling to find ways to monetize their new mobile data networks, and the best path forwardwas not clearly known.? Messaging?? WAP apps?? J2ME?? I tacked the topic in my February, 2001 remarks during the ?Wireless Information Trends? panel at the Internet Wireless East conference in NYC.? My presentation (available on SlideShare) describes how wireless data could ?cross the chasm? by focusing providing ?uniquely valuable mobile data access, when and where it has the highest value? ? meaning enterprise solutions with ROI-provable business value generated through improved customer service and operational efficiencies.

So this year?s Mobile MobileCon 2012 ? CTIA?s renamed fall show, held this year September 9-11 in San Diego ? felt like an episode of ?Back to the Future? for me, but with a twist:? enterprise CIOs and business unit managers were there in droves, actually attending sessions and talking with vendors about how they can capitalize on mobile data to improve their operational and financial performance.? Mobile enterprise solutions are finally beginning to saturate the enterprise.? The show?s exhibits, Keynotes and ?Thought Leadership? sessions presented a wide swath of opportunities for enterprise CIOs to consider, including BYOD (Bring Your Own Device), M2M (machine-to-machine communications), mobile payments and location-based workforce management, auto insurance and asset/people tracking.? Finally.? Enterprise mobile data has gone mainstream.? Hooray!

Highlights from the show include:

BYOD:? Even BlackBerry, the enterprise mobile device often pushed into employee hands as their ?work phone? (whether they want a second phone or not), has jumped onto the BYOD bandwagon.? RIM?s CIO Robin Bienfait, made this important statement during her Keynote address, ?Employees want choice and freedom.? This may not always be easy for us that are CIOs, but this is what employees need to be successful and it?s our job to find the balance.?? BlackBerry, fighting for relevance in an increasingly BYOD world, is promoting the ?BlackBerry Balance? features of its BB10 operating system (now delayed until March, 2013) as the solution to BYOD, though as described, Balance may fall well short of the goal.? BlackBerry Balance segregates enterprise data into a protected partition on the smartphone, which can only be viewed when the user is logged in.? The solution, however, hits a snag when it comes to apps that actively share personal and enterprise data, including calendar and contacts.? When a user is logged in, both personal and enterprise contacts and events are viewable.? But when logged out, only personal information can be seen ? meaning that users who move between personal and business activities frequently are likely to leave the enterprise side of Balance logged in all the time? causing the ?protection? provided by Balance to be bypassed by user practice.? BYOD has attracted a lot of companies anxious to provide tools to solve the conundrum, including giants IBM Global Services and SAP and emerging companies such as Absolute Software.

M2M:? The ?M2M Zone? was bustling as usual, with manufacturers announcing new machine-to-machine modules, chipsets, devices and services in practically every booth.? The M2M Thought Leadership stage drew a big crowd on both Tuesday and Wednesday.? RACO Wireless, an M2M reseller who managed to acquire T-Mobile?s entire M2M team last year, announced a ?significant? investment from private equity firm Inverness Graham Investments that should put them into a growth spurt including acquisitions in the M2M space.? The M2M Zone also buzzed about AT&T?s announced shut-down of their 2G EDGE network, and how that will impact M2M in the U.S.? Since they generally carry small payloads, most M2M devices that use cellular connection are on 2G networks.? Upgrading to 3G can be costly:? not only do the devices need to be retrofitted with new wireless data cards or modems, which are slightly more expensive than their 2G counterparts, monthly service for 3G vs. 2G service is significantly more costly.? Many in the M2M space wonder whether the AT&T 2G shut-down provides an opportunity for wi-fi and other non-operator-based mobile services to gain greater market share in M2M.

LBS (Location-Based Services):? Mobile app and platform providers have created a seemingly endless set of uses for location data now that mobile phones know where they are, including mobile shopping, mobile enterprise workforce management, asset and people tracking and oh-so-much more.? Now LBS providers are looking for new ways to monetize their experience and the huge datasets they have accumulated.? Touting themselves as a ?location-as-a-service? provider, Locaid Technologies provides mobile location data accumulated from mobile operators, IP addresses, wi-fi and landline phones to provide location data for financial services (to verify a cardholder?s location at purchase), digital signage (displaying ads related to nearby purchases) and mobile gam[bl]ing (verifying the gambler is in Nevada).? In contrast to competitors Location Labs and Location Smart, Locaid focuses on the enterprise market, and is able to locate devices in 200 countries.? Omnilink Systems, best known for offender ankle bracelets, is leveraging their well-developed backend platform to bring connectivity and device management to an expanding set of markets including consumer automotive (in partnership with Audiovox) and shipping container tracking.

LTE:? Verizon Wireless CTO, Nicola Palmer, announced in a Day 1 press conference that their LTE network is live in 417 U.S. cities, and is already carrying 35% of their mobile data traffic.? Verizon also promised Voice-over-LTE service by late 2013/early 2014 which should give them a continued lead in the U.S LTE space.? Sprint and AT&T are also aggressively building out LTE, but it?s likely that Verizon will dominate the U.S. 4G landscape for some time.

Automotive:? The standing-room-only crowd on Day 3?s Thought Leadership panel on pay-as-you-go auto insurance indicated the high level of interest in connected vehicle solutions amongst MobileCON 2012 participants.? Companies attending the show in this segment included BlackBerry subsidiary QNX, M2M MVNO?s KORE, Aeris, nPhase, Numerex and Omnilink, Progressive Insurance, Audiovox, antenna and cell signal booster providers Wilson Electronics and Taoglas LTD, and even Zipcar, whose in-car and mobile app strategy was described in a Day 1 keynote by CEO/Chairman Scott Griffith.? Verizon?s purchase of Hughes Telematics, a rival to OnStar, signals possible deep integration of telematic services into carrier service/pricing offers.

mPayments:? Day 3?s panel on mobile commerce was, in my view, the most compelling presentation of the show.? Senior executives from MCX (a coalition of major retailers that claims shoppers visit a participating locations multiple times per week), Intuit, Mozido, BarclayCard and Isis (a coalition of U.S. mobile operators) shared a lively discussion about how the ?wallet wars? will shake out, who will win, and why.? Big issues to be addressed before mobile payments become generally adopted include whether they address a real customer pain point, what partnerships are needed to succeed, whether mobile shopping and other in-building technologies are friend or foe, and how the mobile payments sector will overcome fragmentation in methods, standards and retailer adoption.? Several other mobile payments and mobile marketing firms prowled the exhibit floor or press rooms telling their story, including Bango and mBlox, with whom I got to sit down for a full briefing.? More on those soon.

High-end handsets:? While I?m not generally a handset junkie, the rash of highly capable smartphones announced or introduced at the show turned my head.? Compelling new handsets include the first Windows Mobile 8 handset, Nokia Lumia 810 as well as HTC One VX and LG Optimus G.? I got to play with the Optimus G at LG?s launch party, and was impressed with how it takes advantage of its quad-core processor for visual multitasking and its 13 megapixel camera (Sprint model).? The Optimus G launch party also provided a rare opportunity for Lamberth & Associates to hold an informal teambuilding session:? thanks to Bill and Tracey Soucy, Rob Chamberlain, Christine and Stephan Cooper for helping to make it a memorable event.

Wireless Hall of Fame:? Held the night before the show, the Wireless Hall of Fame banquet was a highlight.? This event provides the best senior-level networking opportunities of the conference, with senior executives from mobile operators and technology providers in attendance to present awards to the visionary technologists and business leaders who created the mobile industry.? Honorees this year were:

  • Wayne Perry, former McCaw Wireless President, AT&T Wireless Services Vice-Chairman, NEXTLINK Communications CEO and CTIA Chairman from 1993 to 1994.
  • Richard Lynch, Executive Vice President at Verizon Communications, and CTO of Bell Atlantic Mobile where he built one of the largest early wireless data networks in the country based on CDPD (Cellular Digital Packet Data) technology.
  • Raj Singh, Founder of mobile network engineering firm LCC International.? Singh designed early cellular phone networks in more than 30 countries and co-founded Appex, one of the first wireless roaming clearinghouses in the United States, which was subsequently sold to Electronic Data Systems (EDS).
  • Amos Joel (posthumously), AT&T Bell Labs engineer and the ?father of switching? who designed and patented automated mobile switching that made cellular telephone service possible.

If you?re attending MobileCON next year, don?t miss the Wireless Hall of Fame banquet!? In additional to gilt-edged networking and an audience restricted by the high ticket price ($250), it?s a highly entertaining and informative view of how far the mobile industry has come in a short time and a celebration of those brilliant minds that made cellular possible.

This summary only scratches the surface of the interesting and exciting developments coming out of this year?s MobileCON, and I?m looking forward to next year?s show.? Feel free to reach out if you?d like to discuss any of these findings, or other impressions from the show, in person.? It would be my honor.

Mechanisms of action for green tea extract in breast cancer prevention identified

ScienceDaily (Oct. 18, 2012) ? An oral green tea extract, Polyphenon E, appears to inhibit vascular endothelial growth factor and hepatocyte growth factor, both of which promote tumor cell growth, migration and invasion.

Researchers made this discovery during a secondary analysis of a phase Ib randomized, placebo-controlled study of Polyphenon E in a group of 40 women with hormone receptor-negative breast cancer. Katherine D. Crew, M.D., assistant professor of medicine and epidemiology at Columbia University Medical Center in New York, N.Y., presented the data at the 11th Annual AACR International Conference on Frontiers in Cancer Prevention Research, held in Anaheim, Calif., Oct. 16-19, 2012.

"Many preclinical studies have looked at epigallocatechin-3-gallate, or EGCG, which is one of the main components of green tea, and the various possible mechanisms of its action against cancer, but it is very difficult to do those same kinds of studies in humans," Crew said. "This study was too small to say for sure if green tea will prevent breast cancer, but it may move us forward in terms of understanding antitumor mechanisms."

In the primary analysis, presented at last year's Frontiers in Cancer Prevention Research meeting, 40 women were randomly assigned to 400 mg, 600 mg or 800 mg of Polyphenon E or to placebo twice daily for six months. During that time, researchers collected blood and urine samples from participants at baseline and at two, four and six months.

In this secondary analysis, Crew and colleagues used the blood and urine samples to examine biologic endpoints, such as inflammatory proteins, growth factors and lipid biomarkers, which might point to the mechanism of action behind green tea extract. Biomarker data were available for 34 of the 40 patients.

Women assigned to the extract had an average 10-fold increase in green tea metabolites compared with placebo. In addition, they had a significant reduction in hepatocyte growth factor levels at two months compared with women assigned to placebo. However, at the four-month and six-month follow-ups, the difference was no longer statistically significant.

The researchers also identified a trend toward decreased total serum cholesterol and decreased vascular endothelial growth factor in women assigned to the extract.

According to Crew, it is still too early to recommend green tea extract to prevent breast cancer. Currently, researchers are conducting several ongoing studies to explore the use of oral green tea extract in high-risk women for the primary prevention of breast cancer.

?

My take on the MAC BlushBaby Blush:?

  • Color & Texture: The color can be best described as a pink with a distinct beige. It?s this inclusion of beige that makes this so wearable and a versatile shade as well. This blush is from the Sheertone finish range which means it?s supposed to go on quite sheer. It has absolutely no shimmer which is great for working gals and blush virgins alike.
  • Price: ?INR 1100
  • Quantity: ?6g

?

?

  • Pigmentation: This blush, despite being a sheertone finish blush, is insanely pigmented. Usually sheertone blushes are safer in the sense that it?s hard to pick up excess color, but Blushbaby is a class apart. It?s crazy pigmented and you literally need a very tiny bit for application.
  • Staying Power: This blush stays for about 5hrs without fading and even after that, it leaves a nice tint of pink of the cheeks.

?

This is a great blush for anyone and everyone and I mean that. Whether you are light skinned or on the darker side, this blush will look just as gorgeous on every skintone. I would say, it?s tailor-made for indian skintones. It?s the kind of blush that you can reach for at anytime?much like Desert Rose which is another cult fav the only difference being that desert rose is way pinker and may not suit everyone at every occasion. Blushbaby on the other hand is a blush you can reach for blindly regardless of whether you?re going to work, a movie, or a night out with your friends.
