The Kentucky Derby is known as much for hats and high fashion as it is for fast horses. This year, rains are swamping Churchill Downs, but fans on the infield are still holding their heads ? and their hats ? high.

Bigger and bolder is the rule for hats that often dwarf their owners.

April Pauley of Columbus, Ohio, paraded around in the mud wearing a hat featuring flowers, a papier-mache jockey head and goggles and ribbons. "It's just my own little creation," Pauley said before taking a swig of her beer.

Here's a gallery of Kentucky Derby headwear.

Obama visits Mexico; immigration, energy, security in focus

By Mark Felsenthal and Steve Holland

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - U.S. President Barack Obama arrived in Mexico on Thursday for a visit he hopes will draw attention to Mexico's emerging economic might, even as worries about containing drug-trafficking and related violence remain an inescapable subtext.

Obama meets with Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto and is then due to hold a news conference at 4:10 p.m. CDT (4.10 p.m. EDT).

The U.S. president has said he wants to hear more about Mexico's new policy of restricting contacts with the United States on drugs and drug-related violence to a single point, the Ministry of the Interior.

The "single-door" policy would be an abrupt change from the wide latitude the U.S. government enjoyed in working with Mexican officials across agencies under Pena Nieto's predecessor, Felipe Calderon.

"From their perspective, its the effort to have better control over all the aspects of security policy and make it more fluid," said Maureen Meyer, a Mexico specialist with the Washington Office on Latin America, a U.S. non-governmental organization.

The change has raised concern about Mexico's commitment to combating drug trafficking and drug-related violence.

While the Mexican government has said that killings linked to organized crime fell 14 percent in the first four months of Pena Nieto's presidency, more than 70,000 people are estimated to have been killed in drug violence in Mexico since 2007, and gang-style murders continue to provide lurid headlines.

"Crime lurks in the background throughout everything. They know it," said Diana Negroponte, a foreign policy fellow at the Brookings Institution, referring to the Mexican government.

Some question whether Calderon's aggressive policies, which focused on eradicating gang leaders, has been successful or whether it has generated additional violence as rival factions vie for control of turf.

"There's a lot of resentment that the consumption problem is coming from the United States, and so are the guns, and they're getting all the violence, and they're fed up with it," said one government Latin America analyst, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

RIGHTS WORRIES

Rights group Human Rights Watch sent a letter to Obama ahead of his visit urging him to review the United States' public security approach with Mexico, rapping his administration for offering "uncritical support" for Calderon's policies and citing a "dramatic increase" in rights abuses.

Both Obama and Pena Nieto have said they want the visit to focus on economic issues rather than security. Pena Nieto is eager to underscore Mexico's recent run of solid economic growth, fueled in part by its increasing attractiveness as a manufacturing hub.

"The new government wants to change the narrative," said former U.S. ambassador to Mexico Jeffrey Davidow. "It doesn't want the headlines to be about murders and decapitations."

The Mexican president has launched an ambitious reform agenda, aiming to overhaul the tax system and energy sector, among other areas, in a bid to boost economic growth.

"The way the agenda is laid out is to emphasize the economic side of things, to show that the relationship is about more than just security," said Duncan Wood, director of the Mexico Institute at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars. "The signal that's being sent is that the United States fully supports the reform agenda."

Obama, for his part, would like to highlight Mexico's progress in moving up the economic ladder, in part to emphasize that his own goal of reforming U.S. immigration laws will not promote an exodus of Mexicans into the United States.

The two presidents are also likely to discuss the fate of a much-ballyhooed agreement that would remove obstacles to expanding deepwater drilling for oil in the Gulf of Mexico.

The United States has yet to finalize the deal, know as the Transboundary Hydrocarbons Agreement, which provide guidelines for drilling in an area of the Gulf that straddles the U.S.-Mexico boundary.

The deal is seen as the key to opening a new era of cooperation on oil production between the two countries. Mexico's state-owned oil company Pemex needs technology and investment to boost its stagnant production, and U.S. companies are eager to help.

American Idol: So close, yet so far

On Thursday, American Idol bid farewell to one of their remaining four finalists, denying them the coveted opportunity to become hometown heroes for a day. Which Idol is going home to tears rather than fanfare?

Ryan was right when he said that this elimination, right before hometown visits is arguably the most difficult of the season. The awareness of this impending difficulty was etched on the faces of every hopeful as they were forced to endure another long, drawn out episode featuring past contestants and current performers hoping to tap into Idol's diminishing fan base before it flatlines all together.

On Thursday, the roster included past winner David Cook who (I'm pleased to report) was looking markedly less creepy than he did during Idol's notorious season 7, also known as the David versus David season. In addition to reducing fine lines and creep-factor, David Cook's Idol win also helped him to purchase a nice little house in Nashville, complete with three dogs and a yard.

Also on hand to take us on a trip down memory lane was Season 4's elimination shocker, Constantine Maroulis, who has the distinct pleasure of being one of the least attractive man to ever make me swoon. There is just something intoxicating about the heady blend of Bohemian Rhapsody and long flowing locks, which is why Dana Carvey's roll as Garth in Wayne's World forever solidified his role as a Hollywood Sex Symbol. Unlike Dana, Constantine went on to do great things after his iconic performance of Bohemian Rhapsody, such as earning himself a Tony nomination for his roll in the Broadway hit, Rock of Ages.

Joining such Idol elites was recording artist known simply by his first name, will.i.am. will.i.am dropped his last name, a.plagiarist, when he became an artist, fearing that it might prevent other artists from collaborating with him, at least knowingly. Harry Connick, Jr. also returned on Thursday for another moment in the Idol spotlight, this time performing a song from his new album. Harry really should have quit while he was ahead and ended on Wednesday's high note.?

Speaking of ending on a high note, finally, after four guests, two hideously painted Ford Fusions and 14,673 plugs for the movie, The Great Gatsby, Ryan dimmed the lights. As the numbers of contestants dwindle, it becomes more difficult to create anticipation with the results. No more easing into them throughout the course of the show. No more hopefuls herded into misleading groups on opposite sides of the stage. No, with just four left, the elimination is a perfunctory job saved for the last minutes of the show, the only real pleasure, a sadistic one that comes after Phil Phillips's sweet voice lulls the fallen Idol into a depressed delirium, when Ryan hands the loser the microphone to sing so we can all take bets on how many versus she'll make it through without falling apart.

This week, as predicted, that poor sacrificial lamb was the judges' favorite Amber Holcomb, whose swan song was punctuated by rogue sobs until finally she?succumbed?to the sad reality that she was so close, yet so tragically far from earning a hometown visit. Chin up Amber, it's clear that Nicki is jonesing for her own little Bieber and thinks you might just fit the bill.

Mortal Kombat 9: Top fighting video game on PlayStation 3

You may have often found the video game industry analyst ringing the alarming bells by stating that the gaming consoles are on the decline since the arrival of smartphones and tablets. This concern, however, is without merit because the video game consoles are not going anywhere.

There are a lot of things to keep the gaming consoles alive, one of which is fighting games. If you were fortunate enough to own a Sega in the 80s and 90s, then you would surely have spent a major chunk of your childhood playing Street Fighter II.

Another game that you would have surely played during your childhood is Mortal Kombat. Both Street Fighter II and Mortal Kombat have offered countless hours of fun and entertainment.

Even today, the popularity of fighting games is sky high. If you own a PlayStation 3, then there is a good chance that you would have a few really good fighting games in your collection.

There is one game that really stands out from the rest and no, we are not talking about Tekken Tag Tournament 2. There is another game, one that is so bloody that it can make your little brother scream in horror, so much fun that it can even get your parents involved and so satisfying that you will never need to spend hundreds of dollars on boosting your confidence. This game is none other than Mortal Kombat 9.

After disappointing the fans over and over again, the team behind the Mortal Kombat franchise finally got it right.

With a large roster, full of characters that have both personality and style, gamers will find themselves developing a certain likeness, or hatred, for them.

There is a huge variety of moves, which can be enhanced through the use of the power gauge at the bottom of the screen that fills up every time a player attacks, takes damage or uses special attacks.

The additional of X-Ray attack is without any doubt the highlight of Mortal Kombat 9. The sheer sight of watching your player break the bones of your opponent brings you more joy than driving down the highway on a Porsche.

Researchers look to mathematics, nature, to understand the immune system and its role in cancer

May 1, 2013 ? Can the patterns in tree branches or the meandering bends in a river provide clues that could lead to better cancer therapies? According to a new study from Virginia Commonwealth University Massey Cancer Center, these self-similar, repeating patterns in nature known as fractals help scientists better understand how the immune system is organized and may one day be used to help improve stem cell transplant outcomes in leukemia patients by predicting the probability of transplant complications.

Recently published in the journal Biology of Blood and Marrow Transplantation, the study led by Amir Toor, M.D., found a fractal pattern in the T cell repertoire of 10 unrelated stem cell transplant donors and recipients. T cells are a family of immune system cells that keep the body healthy by identifying and launching attacks against pathogens such as bacteria, viruses or cancer. T cells have small receptors that recognize antigens, which are proteins on the surface of foreign cells. Once T cells encounter a foreign cell, the antigen fits into the T cell's receptor like a key in a lock and the T cell's deadly arsenal is unleashed on the threat. Once activated, T cells divide into many clones with receptors designed to recognize and guard against that specific pathogen. Over the course of a person's life, he will develop millions of these clonal families, which make up his T cell repertoire and protect him against the many threats that exist in his unique environment.

"The technological advancements of high throughput sequencing have only recently allowed scientists to sequence the genetic material responsible for T cell repertoire. At first glance, the data looks like a chaotic jumble of information," says Toor, a hematologist in the Bone Marrow Transplant Program and researcher in the Developmental Therapeutics program at VCU Massey Cancer Center. "However, if you study a person's T cell repertoire by analyzing the DNA segments responsible for the various types of T cell receptors, you begin to notice a fractal pattern based on segment usage." Toor and his team are hopeful that this information will give them clues that will help them better understand the recovery of immune function following stem cell transplantation and possibly predict complications such as graft-versus-host disease in transplant recipients.

Much like a child can assemble Lego blocks to create a range of different models, humans have evolved a highly efficient process by which a short span of the genome called the T cell receptor locus rearranges gene fragments to create a multitude of different T cell receptor families. In this process, DNA segments known as variable (V), diversity (D) and joining (J) segments are rearranged to create the millions of T cell receptor families, or clones, that the body uses to combat disease. Similar to how the branching pattern of a tree is faithfully replicated from the trunk all the way to its farthest branches, T cells have families that are created from DNA segments branching out from one another to form a shield that provides protection from diseases.

Toor's team looked at the frequency of T cell clones bearing different V, D and J segments in stem cell transplant donors and recipients following stem cell transplantation. Using a circular diagram designed by researcher Jeremy Meier, B.S., to better visualize the arrangement of the different DNA segments, the team observed a similar fractal order in the T cell receptor families of the donors. This order was even apparent in donors of different ethnicities living on different continents. In patients who had received a stem cell transplant, Toor found that this pattern was disrupted and the patients displayed a lower level of complexity in their T cell receptor repertoire at three months after transplant, followed by a modest improvement when a full year had elapsed after transplantation.

"Attempting to restore the fractal order of a patient's T cell receptor repertoire by optimizing the stem cell transplant process could serve as a valuable therapeutic target," says Toor. "Additionally, our findings lend an insight into nature, such that even in complex biological systems bereft of physical form, mathematically determined organization is observed."

Toor and his colleagues plan to continue using high throughput sequencing of patients' T cell receptors to learn more about how the immune system recovers following stem cell transplantation. The team hopes this will give them valuable information about the effectiveness of future stem cell transplant and immunotherapy clinical trials developed in their clinic.

Fla. Senate passes Negron's Medicaid bill

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) -- The Senate passed a bill without debate Tuesday that would accept more than $50 billion federal dollars and offer health coverage to more than 1 million Floridians under the federal health law. The move sent a strong message to the House that the Senate is not backing down on a Medicaid expansion alternative, making a compromise unlikely in the final days of session.

But House Republicans refused to consider the bill and have resisted accepting any money tied to President Obama's Affordable Care Act and instead passed a bill that would use $237 million in state funds to cover about 115,000 residents.

House Democratic Leaders Perry Thurston and Mia Jones met with Gov. Rick Scott Tuesday morning and urged him to veto the budget should the Legislature fail to approve a health coverage expansion plan this session that relies upon available federal dollars.

"I'm sure our governor knows it's time for him to step up and get involved ... He should call a special session and he should veto this budget," Thurston said.

Later Tuesday, Thurston and other angry House Democrats used a procedural move to stall the session in its final days to express their frustration over the Medicaid gridlock, and required that all bills must be read in full before they are voted on. Republicans responded by using an "auto reader" machine that reads bills. One bill took more than 20 minutes to read.

He said the drastic situation required drastic tactics and that House Democrats want affordable health care for Floridians "by whatever means necessary."

"We could go ahead and sine die and leave 1.2 million people hanging. People are dying. This is about saving lives. The bill is there, the finances are there," Thurston said.

Thurston, D-Fort Lauderdale, said they planned to continue on with the stall tactic through Wednesday.

Scott, House Democrats, Florida hospitals, health advocates and a diverse mix of business and labor groups all lined up in support of the Senate bill proposed by Republican Joe Negron that would draw down more than $50 billion federal dollars over the next decade and give it to an estimated 1.1 Floridians. The bill would not expand Medicaid but give money to residents to purchase private insurance.

The federal government has agreed to pay 100 percent of the costs for the 1.1 million newly insured and 90 percent for three years after, but House Republicans worry the feds will not make good on a promise, leaving them on the hook.

It's unclear how much, if any, pressure Scott will place on his Republican colleagues in the House even though he signaled his support for Medicaid expansion. The governor would not answer questions Tuesday about whether he'd spoken to any lawmakers individually about Medicaid expansion alternatives.

Scott has focused on teacher pay raises and other legislative issues and mostly stayed out of the Medicaid fray, but almost daily has expressed his support for Negron's plan and his desire to the Legislature to do the right thing.

Negron said Monday he will continue working on the issue "until they turn the lights out in the Senate chamber" but said the differences between the House and Senate may be too far to bridge this late in the session.

Starving Virginia settlers turned to cannibalism in 1609: study

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Settlers at Virginia's Jamestown Colony resorted to cannibalism to survive the harsh winter of 1609, dismembering and consuming a 14-year-old English girl, the U.S. Smithsonian Institution reported on Wednesday.

A recent excavation at the historic site revealed not just the remains of dogs, cats and horses eaten by settlers during the cold "Starving Time" of that year, but also the bones of a girl known to researchers simply as "Jane."

This is the first direct evidence of cannibalism at Jamestown, the oldest permanent English colony in the Americas, the Smithsonian said on its website.

The institution is the biggest museum and research complex in the world with 19 museums and galleries, most of them in Washington. It also includes the National Zoo.

"Historians have gone back and forth on whether this sort of thing really happened here," said Smithsonian forensic anthropologist Douglas Owsley, who analyzed the bones after they were found by Preservation Virginia, a private nonprofit group.

"Given these bones in a trash pit, all cut and chopped up, it's clear that this body was dismembered for consumption," Owsley said in the online announcement at http://www.smithsonianmag.com/history-archaeology/Starving-Settlers-in-Jamestown-Colony-Resorted-to-Eating-A-Child-205472161.html .

It is unknown whether "Jane" was murdered or died of natural causes, whether several people or just one person participated in what the announcement called "the butchering."

"The chops to the forehead are very tentative, very incomplete," Owsley said. "Then, the body was turned over, and there were four strikes to the back of the head, one of which was the strongest and split the skull in half. A penetrating wound was then made to the left temple, probably by a single-sided knife, which was used to pry open the head and remove the brain."

The brain, tongue, cheeks and leg muscles appear to have been eaten, with the brain probably consumed first because it decomposes soon after death, the announcement said.

Scholars have speculated that extreme drought, hostile relations with the local Powhatan Confederacy and a lost supply ship made the Jamestown colonists desperate enough to eat humans. Writings had suggested it, but no hard physical evidence existed until now.

William Kelso, lead archeologist on the project, and his team discovered the girl's remains last summer.

"We found a deposit of refuse that contained butchered horse and dog bones," Kelso said. "That was only done in times of extreme hunger. As we excavated, we found human teeth and then a partial human skull."

(This version of the story corrects the spellings of Owsley, Kelso and also adds a dropped word in the third paragraph.)

Ancient Egyptian Fun Facts ~ EGY-KING

The ancient Egyptians had great lives and in spite of working so hard, they never forgot leisure and recreation. Thus, equal or sometimes even more importance was given to pursuing leisure activities. Some of the activities which the ancient Egyptians pursued were:

Fishing : Although fishing was a means of subsistence for some, it was a pastime as well. Drawings from the Old and New kingdom display fishing in a recreational context. As a matter of fact, this evidence suggests that the Egyptians were the first to fish for pleasure. Many different fishing artifacts such as rods and various types of hooks have been unearthed to show the versatility of their equipment. Fishing for survival was traditionally carried out with a net or spear, while the angler used a rod and line.

Hunting : Javelin throwing was mostly associated with hunting for both sport and the provision of food. However, with the arrival of farming and agriculture, hunting for survival became outdated in ancient Egypt. However, hunting continued to be practiced a sport especially by the noble class and pharaohs.Lions were hunted with the help of a bow and arrow from a chariot.

One of the archaeologists JH Breasted, recorded the ancient records of Egypt which pointed out the fact that Amenhotep III hunted and killed as many as 102 fierce lions Likewise, archery was a very popular sports recreation in Egypt; although it seems to have been practiced more by royalty for entertainment purposes than for practical means.

Sport : The ancient Egyptians enjoyed their sport. In fact, many athletic events and some team sports have descended from this land long time back. One team sport was very similar to hockey. Wielding clubs made of palm branches, they would hit a ball made of leather stuffed with papyrus and stitched. The bow and arrow was not only used in hunting and warfare but as sport as well. One of the oldest sports, archery was practiced in ancient Egypt.

The contestants were judged on accuracy on the target as well as strength to pull the bow. Additionally, the Nile provided calm waters for another of ancient Egypt's more popular sports namely swimming and rowing. Some of the wealthier classes had pools built for princes to learn and practice the sport.

Just chilling out : Apart from the above stated activities and sports that ancient Egyptians indulged in, there were some other activities which did not involve any rigorous physical activity. The ancient Egyptians played a variety of games which were different for adults and children. The children mostly played board games but occasionally also played with toys made especially for the little children.

Since boards games of all quality have been discovered it is needless to say that the games were played by all classes of people in Ancient Egypt. The most popular of these was the game Senet especially with the wealthier males of the society. Senet was a popular Ancient Egyptian board game. This game symbolized the struggle of good against evil. The evil forces tried to stop you from reaching the Kingdom of the god Osiris. The rules of this game were very complex.

It consisted of a board with 30 holes, 3 rows and 10 columns. Most of the games used 7 pawns, sticks or knucklebones for each of the two players but some only had 5. During the New Kingdom, the game of Senet had acquired a religious and magical interpretation which symbolized the passage of the deceased through the other world with his resurrection dependent upon his/her ability to win the game.

Music was an integral part of both Egyptian culture and religion in spite of not having any written record of annotated music. As a matter of fact, it was believed that music pleased the gods and mortals alike and nearly any festival or banquet included musicians. Many depictions and artifacts exist including a number of instruments that have been preserved.

In addition to these, ancient Egypt sports also included lengthy marathons which are a part of a number of ancient Egyptian texts. Marathons played a part in the coronation festivities of pharaohs throughout most ancient Egyptian history.

Navy charges 2 in deaths of 2 divers at Md. pond

(AP) ? Two members of a Virginia-based Navy dive unit face military criminal charges of involuntary manslaughter and dereliction of duty in the February drowning deaths of two divers at an Army facility test pond near Baltimore, officials said Wednesday.

Navy officials said the two defendants, whom they haven't identified, are a chief warrant officer 3 and a senior chief petty officer in Mobile Diving and Salvage Unit 2. The sailors had a supervisory role in the events at the pond, according to Navy officials in Washington who discussed the matter on condition of anonymity because the case is under investigation.

They also belonged to the same unit as the victims, Diver 1st Class James Reyher, 28, of Caldwell, Ohio, and Diver 2nd Class Ryan Harris, 23, of Gladstone, Mo., said Lt. Cdr. Charity Hardison of the Navy Expeditionary Combat Command in Virginia Beach, Va.

The two sailors drowned Feb. 26 during routine diving operations at an underwater weapons-testing facility, dubbed the Super Pond, at Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland. The Army installation is about 20 miles northeast of Baltimore.

Their deaths came weeks after the Jan. 30 death of civilian technician George Lazzaro at the same pond. Lazzaro was doing underwater maintenance of the facility. His cause of his death hasn't been released.

The defendants will face an Article 32 hearing, the military equivalent of a preliminary hearing or grand jury investigation, on May 21 at Naval Station Norfolk in Virginia. The hearing will determine whether the charges will be referred to a court-martial, dealt with administratively or dismissed.

"The command is saying, 'We think there's enough evidence for these charges,'" Hardison said. "An investigating officer will look at the information and decide whether the charges are substantiated."

Hardison said the command won't disclose the defendants' names until the May 21 hearing.

The Navy divers' deaths were investigated by Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal Group 2 and the Naval Criminal Investigative Service. A spokesman for the explosive ordnance unit referred calls to Hardison. An NCIS spokesman didn't immediately reply to an email from The Associated Press for information about the investigation.

The death of Lazzaro, 41, of Nottingham, is being investigated by the Army's Criminal Investigation Division, the Army Combat Readiness/Safety Center at Fort Rucker, Ala., and the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration. The Army units didn't immediately respond to AP queries. An OSHA spokeswoman said that agency's investigation isn't complete.

The Super Pond is used to conduct shock testing of vessels, submarine systems and munitions. With a bottom measuring 300 feet in diameter and a maximum depth of 150 feet, the facility also has been used in testing torpedoes, missiles, warheads, amphibious and remotely controlled vehicles, underwater gun firing and acoustics.

The sailors belonged to an expeditionary mobile unit whose salvage operations have included TWA Flight 800, Swiss Air Flight 111, the space shuttles Challenger and Columbia, and the Civil War ironclad USS Monitor.

The unit also provided damage assessments and repairs on the USS Cole and participated in humanitarian missions following Hurricane Katrina and the 2010 earthquake that struck Haiti.

Car bomb in Baghdad Shiite suburb kills 4

(AP) ? Iraqi officials say a car bomb in a Shiite suburb of Baghdad has killed four people and wounded 12 others.

Two police officers say the parked car bomb went off early Wednesday morning in Hussainya and killed four civilians. They added that 12 others, including four policemen who were in a nearby checkpoint, were wounded.

The Shiite-dominated district is located some 25 kilometers (15 miles) east of the center of the capital.

A medical official confirmed the casualty figures. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity as they were not authorized to release information.

Violence in Iraq has spiked since April 23, when security forces tried to make arrests at a Sunni Muslim protest camp in the northern city of Hawija.
