Data Recovery Lab - Digital Forensics Forums | ForensicFocus.com

- CopyRight

Regarding the duration of the training, its around 10 days, the participants will be Qualified Forensic Investigators.

what do you recon?

From what I can see on this board and on hddguru, the guys actually in the business of data recovery show two "main" profiles (I am talking here NOT about the - again no offense intended - "base personnel" or "trained monkeys" that could well be present in a largish data recovery lab, I am talking of the director/person in charge):
#1 Self-educated
  • Typically started fiddling with electronics at 13 or 14
  • Disassembled anything that can be connected to a mains or batteries and in some cases even managed to re-assemble it functioning before being 18
  • Used to repair all friends' and family's PC's, cable connection, TV's etc. for years
  • Can write simple programs in any computer language known to men (and actually likes doing that)
  • Worked for a few years as PC repairman in a large organization, where he/she was faced with data recovery issues and often did the job him/herself
  • Took the plunge and opened his own little firm or found a job as director of a data recovery lab
#2 University educated
  • Studied three or four years programming and computer science (2/3 of which completely UNneeded/Unuseful )
  • Carried two six-months intern placement in a data recovery firm and/or in a digital forensics lab
  • Worked for either of them as employee for a couple of years
  • Took the plunge and opened his own little firm or found a job as director of a data recovery lab

Now, if you already have one person with a profile similar to the above, then the 10 days course is OK, because the rest of the training will be done by him/her.
If not, pretending that anyone, qualified as he/she might be as a forensic investigator, may get in ten days what took the above described profiles a few years to get is IMHO a bit too much.
The CATCH22 Shocked is obviously that IF you had such a resource available you wouldn't be here asking for suggestions as he/she would have already chosen the "right" tools and organized the lab.
