Six-Year-Old Screenwriter Inspires Short Film The Scared Is Scared

the Scared is scared from Bianca Giaever on Vimeo.

What story would a 6-year-old tell if given the chance to make a movie about anything their heart desires?

Seattle native and recent Middlebury College graduate Bianca Giaever interviewed 6-year-old Asa Baker-Rouse to find out, and the result is at once humorous and heartwarming. ?

In today's Lunchtime Laugh, little Asa comes up with a story about "Asa Bear and Toby Mouse," in which the pair of furry animals visit a pool and have a wonderful time, but then find out the pool is closing until springtime. The duo are very sad.

"The point of the story is you don't want to go when something's closing, 'cause then you'll have to wait to go back there," Asa explains. ?

But, he says, all is not lost. Asa Bear and Toby Mouse, he says, will spend their winter doing other fun things together.

The short film is nearly eight minutes long, but it's worth sticking it out 'til the end, when our young screenwriter offers some advice that's wise beyond his years.

"When the scared feeling comes into you, the scared is scared of things you like," Asa says. "So I was scared of a monster and I thought of pizza and juice and some meringues and a cookie."

Giaever lauds Asa's good advice before the film switches to a montage of scenes involving things she likes -- holding hands, reading, hot cocoa and windblown hair.
